Native New Yorker | Cupz N' Crepes | Rock Bottom | Trader Joes | Holsum Bakery

Native New Yorker5030 E. Ray Road, Suite 5(480) 496-5717and1339 E. Chandler Blvd.(480) 283-9600www.NativeNewYorker.com

Owner Rod Ticknor is a very smart man. He knows what people want and they want good food at a good price, especially now. The 35-Cent Wing Tuesdays and 50-Cent Wing Thursdays are one of the big draws. In fact, every year the Ahwatukee Foothills News reader survey has voted them the "Best Wings." Not to mention the $2 Corona, Corona Light and Pacifico beer served seven days a week. Native New Yorker also serves a $5.99 lunch and other value meals starting at only $5.99.

The thought of a coffeehouse and creperie brings images of a prim and proper establishment. Not in the case of Cupz N' Crepes. Instead, you will be surprised to see many Ahwatukee folk lounging on comfy couches in a casual, yet cool, atmosphere. The most intriguing thing is that the menu is extremely affordable. Some of the most popular dishes are the Turkey Pesto crepe for $6.35 and the Nutella crepe with strawberries and bananas for only $6. A spinach, tomato and feta breakfast crepe tasted heavenly and was only $4.50. It's no wonder they've been voted one of the "Best Breakfast" spots, according to Ahwatukee Foothills News readers.

Rock Bottom Restaurant and Brewery14205 S. 50th St.www.rockbottom.com

How about a cold pint of really good, fresh brewed beer and the Brewery Nachos for two? Layers of tortilla chips with vegetarian refried beans, melted cheddar and Monterey Jack cheese, fresh tomatoes and jalapeños with fresh salsa. For $8.49 you get an order of Brewery Nachos, and for an additional $1.99 you can add chicken or beef. This neighborhood favorite offers a full lunch and dinner menu and a $3 happy hour menu Monday through Friday, from 3:30 to 6:30, and during football games. Late-night happy hour starts at 10 p.m.

Trader Joe's4025 E. Chandler Blvd.(480) 759-2295, www.TraderJoes.com

"Quirky" is a good word to explain this grocery store. Since it's not your conventional grocery store, you can bet the items offered are unique. The Trader Joe's brand Chardonnay and Cabernet is only $3.99 each. Of course, Trader Joe's is famous for offering a huge supply of Charles Shaw, or "Two Buck Chuck." The price hasn't changed in years and is still $2.99 a bottle. Bananas are only 19 cents each and the Joe's O's cereal is only $2.29 for a 15-ounce box. If you log on to www.traderjoes.com and click on "Radio/Flyer," you can learn more about the famous Fearless Flyer and even the newest radio commercial announcing current specials.

Holsum Bakery7275 W. Detroit St.www.holsumbakery.com, (602) 252-2351

OK, Holsum Bakery isn't technically in Ahwatukee but we had to mention it due to the unbelievable savings one can receive on baked goods. Plus, it's just a stone's throw away from Chandler Boulevard and Interstate 10. This is what one of our co-workers purchased from Holsum Bakery a few weeks ago:

- 2 loaves of Texas Toast Bread- 1 loaf low-carb bread- 1 loaf multi-grain bread- 2 packages of croissants- 4 packages of cupcakes- 1 12-pack of cinnamon rolls- 2 loaves whole-grain white bread- 1 box of cookiesTotal: only $22.16

But wait, there's more. She then received two free items and filled up her punch card, entitling her to $5 in products for free next time. And, if that's not enough, she received 5 percent off for bringing her own bag.
