Being part of the Kyrene School District since 1999, Kyrene de la Estrella Elementary School offers a schooling community housed by a veteran staff.

Enrollment size currently stands at 495 students, which includes its preschool level.

Principal Michael Lamp is entering his second year as the school’s leader and one of his goals for the school is to continue increasing enrollment.

Lamp feels what sets Estrella apart from other schools in the district is the amount of teacher experience.

“On average, we have 16 years of teacher experience. We have a very veteran staff… It’s a staff that comes here and wants to stay here. They are not looking for greener pastures; they are not looking for a better gig,” Lamp said. “They know they have a place here where it’s a very calm environment, where they have parent support and have kids who come prepared to learn.”

Brian Gibson, principal at Kyrene de las Lomas Elementary School, poses with students at Lomas on Wednesday, Aug. 6.

Kyrene de las Lomas is one of the 12 Kyrene schools in the Ahwatukee area that has been educating its students for many years.

Currently, enrollment at Lomas stands at 744 students from grades preschool through fifth grade.

Principal Brian Gibson said the new school year would bring opportunities for new staff members to be immersed within Lomas’ community.

“We already have a seasoned staff, and we’ve been working on new programs,” he said.

Gibson, who’s starting up his sixth year as principal, said Lomas’ diverse population was what set the school apart from other schools around the district and was a great representation of different communities.

Recently, Lomas earned a “B” grade for the 2013-14 school year from the Arizona Department of Education.
