Regarding the story, “Burglary suspect dies after officer-involved shooting,” Ahwatukee Foothills News, Jan. 18, on pg. 7.

The perpetrator of the burglary on East Capistrano had many opportunities to save his life, starting with deciding not to commit a crime, followed by complying immediately with the officers’ orders and — fatally — not making any movement that could be interpreted as presenting a weapon — a gun, a toy gun, or anything else contrary to STOP.

Responding to a burglary in progress and even making a traffic stop is serious stuff for police officers. They can encounter deadly threat at any time.

So, a sincere, “Well done and thank you” to the Phoenix PD officers who responded to the burglary. We all are a little safer for it.
