Hanna Nelson responded to a previous op-ed (“Do research before attacking the Bible,” June 22, AFN), claiming Andy Wangstad (“Don’t take every word of the Bible as literal truth,” June 8, AFN) should do his research before attacking the Bible. She claims she wants to see scripture references for the bold claims he made, here they are:

Exodus 21:7-11 explains the rules of selling your daughter as a sex slave. Psalms 93:1, 96:10, 104:5, Isaiah 11:12 all make references to a flat earth. There is no mention of the Earth being the center of the universe. However, there are numerous claims that the Earth was made specifically for us. I guess the other 160 billion planets thought to be in our galaxy aren’t good enough, not to mention the trillions existing in other galaxies. Mark 1:34 and Luke 4:41 also explain how Jesus performed exorcisms on the sick.

Christians like to cherry-pick the very few good parts of the Bible, and pretend all of the bad stuff isn’t there. Even if dietary laws and Sabbath observances were meant to stay in the old testament, nowhere in the new testament does it ban slavery, give women equal rights, or ask forgiveness for mass genocide committed in the old testament. Where are the morals there? BTW, 1Timothy 2:12.
