In his speech of Feb. 10, President Obama said it was necessary for health insurance to cover contraceptive care.

His own words... “Now, after the many genuine concerns that have been raised over the last few weeks, as well as, frankly, the more cynical desire on the part of some to make this into a political football, it became clear that spending months hammering out a solution was not going to be an option, that we needed to move this faster. So last week, I directed the Department of Health and Human Services to speed up the process that had already been envisioned. We weren’t going to spend a year doing this; we’re going to spend a week or two doing this.

“Today, we’ve reached a decision on how to move forward.

“Under the rule, women will still have access to free preventive care that includes contraceptive services — no matter where they work. So that core principle remains. But if a woman’s employer is a charity or a hospital that has a religious objection to providing contraceptive services as part of their health plan, the insurance company — not the hospital, not the charity — will be required to reach out and offer the woman contraceptive care free of charge, without co-pays and without hassles.

A few weeks ago I was privileged to have been given some space by the editor of the AFN to express the possibility that socialism could lead to a dictatorship. Consider the words “I directed the...” in the above quotation. Do those sound like the words of the leader of a republican democracy whose constitution he is sworn to uphold? So much for Article 2 and the First Amendment.

The outrage from the Catholic church was immediate. Other denominations quickly followed, as well they should. As expected, the presidential back-pedaling was fast and furious with a few lame adjustments, which mean almost nothing.

To those of you who don’t have a severe case of ocular opacity, the case is clear — we have a duly elected dictator.

Just think, we did it to ourselves. We failed to insist the media do its usual careful vetting of the candidate, now President, about whom we still know nothing of his birth heritage, his college records, his need for two Social Security numbers, one of which is from a state in which he never lived, education grant money he received but which could be given only to a foreign student, and on and on.

The Second Amendment is next on the agenda. You can count on it.

Don Kennedy
