Why government is good

Dear Editor:

I know why I like government. I'm happy to pay taxes.

Mother Nature was not kind to Ahwatukee last week. We had very strong winds, a torrent of rain, followed by golf ball-size hail. I watched about half of the mesquite trees in my front yard break off, get lifted up by the wind and land in the street. I live at the corner of a thoroughfare (Central Avenue) and small neighborhood street. A car coming around the corner could not see the tree piece until it began the turn and then encountered the trunk blocking the road. I was afraid there would be a nasty car accident.

We tried to move the tree but could not budge it. I called, but no landscaping company answered. Finally, at 4:55 p.m., I called the city of Phoenix street services. They sent a crew out, who arrived at 8 p.m. and stayed until 10:45 p.m. when the job was done. The crew told me they were going to other calls after mine and would probably be up most of the night. I did not see any private tree services clearing the trees in the street last night. I don't know of any private emergency crews. If there were, I don't think I could afford it.

Thank you, city of Phoenix. Thank you, fellow Phoenicians.

Ellen Davis
