President Obama is scheduled to visit Desert Vista High School in Ahwatukee Foothills on Tuesday, Aug. 6 to talk about the economy and his plan to strengthen the middle class. As a supporter, I applaud the President for pursuing a plan for economic growth. As part of his agenda, I hope he also addresses the need to put our national debt on a downward path for the sake of generations to come.

As a college student and member of the Campaign to Fix the Debt (www.fixthedebt.org), I am concerned about the future of our economy and the opportunities that will be available to me after I graduate. As our debt grows, so does the government’s interest payments on that debt, which will continue to consume a larger portion of our overall budget at the expense of investments in infrastructure, research and education that benefit my generation. Meanwhile, businesses are holding back on investments and job creation because of the uncertainty surrounding our government’s ability to deal with our long-term debt problems.

While President Obama is right to focus on stimulating economic growth now, I hope that it isn’t paid for by simply passing the bill on to my generation. I hope the President pushes for a long-term comprehensive plan that grows the economy, reduces our national debt, and restores confidence in our future.
