Dear Editor:

Juan Xavier Heath's letter (AFN, Nov. 19), "Who's profiling whom" speaks to a benign profiling based on Hispanic names, i.e., by political parties. It cuts both ways.

Like Juan's, my name - Guadalupe - can't get much more Latino, so I too get targeted (by the Republican Party) and in Spanish no less. Setting aside the fact that I am a registered Independent, and do my homework before voting, being Hispanic has taken on a new and evolving hue for me. I am old enough to have seen and felt real profiling - the physical kind.

With SB 1070, which I strongly oppose and still do, I have ambivalently come to be grateful it passed because its effect has been the opposite of what its proponents desired. Not only will it thankfully push a federal immigration law sooner than later, it has awakened a massive Hispanic antipathy in the U.S. In Arizona more than 70 percent of Hispanics find the law oppressive (Arizona Republic survey in summer 2010). Many of those Latinos could have cared less about voting prior to SB 1070. They do now and whether your name is Juan or John, whichever party sends those mailers in the future, best they word them to Hispanics carefully, in either language.
