The latest partisan player to throw in his two cents on the redistricting process is Wes Gullett, candidate for mayor of Phoenix. Gullett contends that the city of Phoenix, as it exists on the map, should be an independent community of interest in the redistricting process.
Gullett, as a career politician working to serve his own agenda, ignores the genuine "Community of Interest" that exists right here in Ahwatukee. South Mountain is a natural barrier between Ahwatukee and the majority of Phoenix, and citizens of Ahwatukee are not involved with the downtown or North Central neighborhoods - our children go to school in the Kyrene and Tempe Union High school districts, we hold community events with East Valley cities, and frequent the Chandler mall more often than the Biltmore mall.
As a longtime resident of Ahwatukee, I resent Gullett telling me where my "community of interest" exists. While Gullett is out of touch with Ahwatukee, and is attempting to create a district that supports his aspirations for Congress, I am proud to stand with State Sen. John McComish to protect my community, and ensure that Ahwatukee is not lumped together with Gullett's "Phoenix district."
