Dear Editor:

It's so refreshing to see an article about teens who really have a handle on life and are wise beyond their years. Of course, I'm talking about the article ("Ahwatukee teens are staying true to their religion," Feb. 9, AFN) written by Anna Carlos, who emulates the very qualities above.

Ellen Hill already knows the truth of a quote from David Viscott: "The purpose of life is to discover your gift. The meaning of life is to give it away." She comes away from her travels in South America being thankful for what she has.

In my 70-plus years, I have been fortunate to travel as I taught overseas and saw much of the world. So I have many times come to the same conclusion as Ellen when I start pitying myself.

It takes a lot of guts in this "Me-Centric" world to have your picture appear under the subtitle "Religion" as the group from St. Benedict did. It has occurred to me that there are a lot of people who present a good front, but underneath are very insecure.

So Kim Kopplin, Ellen Hill, your reporter, Carla, and friends are fortunate that they have someone with whom they can chat, take their troubles to, and say "thanks" when life is good. Highlighting this group of young teens makes me feel that our country is in good hands.
