A front-page article of the Sept. 5 issue of the Ahwatukee Foothills News states that students within the Tempe Union High School District are succeeding in college readiness according to their ACT scores and that 600 district students sat for the ACT exam (“Ahwatukee high school students ready for college, according to recent ACT scores.”)
Sorry, but there is not a lot of detail provided. On page 6 of the same issue, there is an article that reports the district has a little over 14,000 students (“By the numbers: Number of Kyrene, DV students increase while others continue at steady pace”). It would be easy to assume that one-fourth (3,500) are seniors, but we know that there are some drop outs, so, let’s go with 3,000 seniors. That would mean that only one-fifth of the seniors sat for the ACT exam. What happened to the other 2,400 students? Were they not prepared to take the exam?
