As a Kyrene parent and a 10-year Ahwatukee homeowner, I felt the need to express how important it is for everyone to vote next week on Tuesday, Nov. 5. If you haven’t mailed in your early ballot by Friday, Nov. 1, you can drop it off at ANY polling place.
There are two very important issues affecting funding to both the Kyrene (K-8) and Tempe Union (9-12) school districts on the ballot. Voting yes on both or either of these issues will NOT incur a new tax, it simply renews existing funding to our local districts. Arizona is among the lowest in state funding to districts, so this supplemental local funding is necessary to keep our neighborhood schools competitive and fully functioning.
My motivation to encourage yes votes for Kyrene and Tempe Union as a parent are obvious, but my motivation as a homeowner will remain even when my child is grown. We all know home values are defined by good location, and good location is defined by strong local schools.
Sometimes with smaller elections, it’s easy to ignore them or let our busy day-to-day lives justify apathetic response — I’ve been guilty myself as it seems there’s an election every few months! But I did want to stress how important it is in this election for parents and homeowners to participate for the sake of our local school districts.
