What has Harry done?

Dear Editor:

I could not help but respond to Al Stein’s letter (“GOP wants to defeat Harry, who has done good things,” AFN, March 31), in which Stein stated that Harry Mitchell has done “good things for his constituents” but then didn’t list any.

Stein criticized Anthony Miller for being excited for having prospective candidates that would be able to defeat Mitchell in the next election. Judging by the amount of protest by his constituents, Mitchell went against the majority of his constituents for voting yes on the massive Health Care Bill, which affects one-sixth of our economy. When we elect our congressional candidates to office we expect them to represent us. He did not.

If Stein were to ask Mitchell if the congressman was going to be covered under this bill (or have to pay penalties if he was not), Stein would find out that Mitchell is going to be exempt from it ... along with all other congressional members.

One of our great founders, George Washington, once said “The power under the Constitution will always be in the people. It is entrusted for certain defined purposes, and for a certain limited period, to representatives of their own choosing; and whenever it is executed contrary to their interest or not agreeable to their wishes, their servants can, and undoubtedly will, be recalled.” or in this case replaced.

I, for one, will be voting (excitedly, I might add) against Mitchell in the next election.

Some drive; some just steer

Dear Editor:

I encountered another car steerer this evening on my way home from the office. I have long thought about contacting my Arizona senator and suggesting that a Senate bill be introduced to create a new form of vehicle permit. It would be the Steering License for all those people out there who don’t qualify as drivers.

As I was making my way west down Pecos Road, at a safe clip above the posted speed limit so as not to be run off the road, a car approached in the left lane at a slightly faster speed. We were about a half mile from the Desert Foothills Parkway intersection. Now bear in mind that there is about one-eighth-of-a-mile behind me and the next car following behind in the right lane. But the genius driving the red sedan decided they needed to be in front of me and turned on their blinker (amazing in its own right) to squeeze their sedan into the one-and-a-half-car space between my vehicle and the vehicle in front of me.

For some reason, gaining that extra 200 feet by being in front of me was going to be the perfect place for them. I initially resisted, but finally backed off enough for them to jam their red sedan into the space between. I noticed as we turned the corner and I came alongside in the left lane on Desert Foothills Parkway it appeared the steerer of the red sedan was giving me a round of applause. Maybe for a job well done? I just don’t know.

What I do know is that the person is the perfect candidate for a new Arizona Steering License. Unfortunately if that permit were ever to be issued I feel that most of the people directing vehicles around our streets and highways would have to switch from the current Driving License to a Steering License. Be a Driver, not a Steerer.
