Sometimes you have to fight fire with fire

Dear Editor:

I was born and raised in Panama. I am half Latino (on my mother’s side). Spanish was my first language. I love Mexico’s people, culture and natural beauty. I have traveled throughout the country for more than 40 years – from Sonora to Chiapas. In fact, if I were not an American citizen, I would choose to be Mexican. But, as it so happens, my blood is red, white and blue.

Unfortunately, the USA cannot solve Mexico’s unemployment and economic problems. We cannot fix its corrupt government and failed institutions. In particular, we are not responsible for medicating, educating and incarcerating Mexicans who enter our country illegally (to the tune of 460,000 in Arizona alone).

I have just canceled a two-night reservation for four Americans at a luxury condo in Rocky Point, Mexico, which would have cost me almost $500. In two days and nights our party of four would have spent another $150 to $200 for food, drink and entertainment. That’s a total of $600 in two days. I urge all Arizonans to follow my example and boycott Mexico until President Felipe Calderon of Mexico and politicians like Congressman Raul Grijalva show us some respect. I deeply resent being called a racist or hatemonger just because I support the rule of law and a secure border. Accusing Arizona police officers of “racial profiling” before the fact is an insult to all Arizonans.

It is Barack Obama and his bleeding heart liberals who are “misguided,” not hardworking, taxpaying, law-abiding Arizonans who support the new law. Obama – who supports “soft amnesty” – is not part of the solution to stopping the invasion of our beloved state – he is part of the problem.

To the punks who destroyed CEMENT park benches…

Dear Editor:

I am saddened and disappointed at the disregard given to our community property and to those of us who use the parks and other public areas where it regards the destruction of cement picnic tables, benches and at least one ramada that I know of.

My dog and I would sit, delighted, enjoying the breeze in the shade at both Desert Foothills Park and the little grassy area between Miralago and Toscana Lakeside Condos on South 12th Street, even in the heat of the summer

Cement! How does one destroy a cement object without others hearing or seeing same destruction?

And why? Do these disrespectful punks really think they are bold and impressive with such antics? Rather they are spineless idiots who probably did most of their damage under the cover of night, thinking they were so smart and allusive.

Now there is nowhere to sit unless it’s on the grass (too many ants), or stand, when what’s really wanted is to sit and listen to the birds, or ducks, or just the neighborhood noises. My dog looks at me every time, wondering if we could just take a rest here.

Thanks, guys, your asinine actions have left me with a bitter taste in my mouth for your generation in general. I wonder now if you’re offended.

Thompson is right on

Dear Editor:

I’ve never responded to a commentary before, but “Do something now, or the sky will fall” (AFN, April 28) was so right on and good, I had to comment.

Bravo to Jim Thompson! Thank you for speaking up for those of us who truly care about this country and want it to be the grand place it once was, which is work hard, take care of you, your family and friends.  I’m tired of giving my hard earned money away to those who don’t “earn” a paycheck. If the liberals want to spread the wealth around, let them jump on that train and share their wealth - I don’t want any part of it. Socialism works just fine until the other people’s money runs out.

Enough of the spending Washington!
