Congressman David Schweikert, tagged the most-conservative freshman in Congress, recently voted with his House brethren to bar all federal funding for Planned Parenthood. His vote, disguised as a budget-saving and pro-life measure, is an attack on contraception and women's health. Incredible, considering that the overwhelming majority of Americans, including a majority of all political persuasions, say they support birth control.

Currently, the federal government provides $75 million for Planned Parenthood to offer health and family-planning services to low-income Americans. None of that goes to abortions (remember the Hyde Amendment?). Instead, that money funds contraception, breast exams, cancer screening, HIV and STD testing, and counseling on safer sex and infertility. Planned Parenthood's abortion services are funded separately, making up 3 percent of their services.

Unfund Planned Parenthood and you will be looking at the unintended consequences of more (unwanted) pregnancies and more abortions, which no one from any political party wants to see happen. According to a new Guttmacher Institute report (, publicly funded planning services prevent 1.94 million unintended pregnancies and 810,000 abortions every year.

In addition, this draconian action will actually stymie efforts to balance the budget, as Planned Parenthood and other family-planning services save taxpayers $4 for every $1 invested!

This life-saving issue now goes before the Senate. Please call Senators Kyl (602-840-1891) and McCain (602-952-2410) and urge them to restore funding to Planned Parenthood. While you're at it, let Schweikert (480-946-2411) know that we will hold him accountable for his unconscionable vote to undermine women's health and the federal budget.

RE: Schweikert’s Vote on Women’s Health
Sadly, the reader is misled by yet another agent for the democrat party talking points and we are all challenged by the writer’s misinformation.
The writer states that an “overwhelming majority of Americans support birth control”. That is not the issue. Rather, the facts are that a majority of Americans are against abortion ( 51% to 42%. And, to receive any taxpayer dollars violates the Hyde Amendment (remember?) and violates the conscious of those of us who would rather adopt and raise a child. You see, Representative Schweikert is an adoptee and so was my own father.
Planned Parenthood, according to its most recent annual report ( has received $363.2 million of our tax dollars in terms of government grants and contracts and performed nearly 290,000 abortions! And, even more sad, is that this taxpayer funded organization made less than 1000 adoption referrals-how principled was that?
Planned Parenthood fights informed consent laws (where 88% of Americans favor them) that provide information about the risks of, and alternatives to, abortion for women; Planned Parenthood fights for keeping information of underage children who have had an abortion from their parents; and Planned Parenthood fights to force physicians to give abortions even though their conscience is against it.
In short, David Schweikert is doing exactly the right and principled thing in voting NO to spending taxpayer dollars to support this organization. I am sure that Planned Parenthood does some good things, but then, so does the Salvation Army. We do not give tax dollars to the Salvation Army and if Planned Parenthood wants to provide its services to those who want them, then those who want these services can pay for them or Planned Parenthood can raise money the old fashioned way- through donations and gifts. Do not ask me or expect the Federal government to help an organization that is so anathema to a majority of Americans values and principles.
