Guns on campus

Flanked by opponents of legislation to allow guns on college campuses, Sen. Steve Gallardo says lawmakers should instead focus on proper funding for the schools, both academically and for law enforcement, rather than simply erasing an existing ban. (Capitol Media Services photo by Howard Fischer)

Bill Richardson asked that AZ PASS (Arizona People Acting for a Safer Society) monitor events in Arkansas surrounding a plan to arm teachers (“Are our kids safer this fall?” AFN, Aug. 21). We are happy to let the people of Ahwatukee know that the Arkansas Education Commissioner did not let the plan that Mr. Richardson likes so much take effect due to safety concerns. Common sense often prevails. I would guess too that not too many insurance companies want to write school liability insurance policies when teachers are walking around schools with loaded guns (http://hereandnow.wbur.org/2013/08/19/arm-teachers-arkansas).
