Ahwatukee Foothills citizens, please remember that there is foot traffic besides your car traffic. I happen to walk with a cane and try to cross at intersections as fast as I can when there is a “white hand” telling me it’s OK. I have vehicles running in front of me as well as in back of me. I have no doubt that one day I’ll make a big splash on the ground because some driver was not paying attention while making a turn.

Motor Vehicles Division (of the Arizona Department of Transportation) says: “You must yield the right-of-way to pedestrians in a marked or unmarked crosswalk.”

Another thing to remember, is that rules of the road also apply in the parking lots. If there is a “Stop” sign, it means exactly that. Don’t slow down like you’re going to stop, then “race” through the stop sign. Those of us on foot cannot read your mind. All we are asking is slow down, know the rules at intersections as well as in parking lots, and we all will be much safer.
