Understanding the origins of SB1070

Dear Editor:

Calling all supporters of SB1070 racist is unfair and unhelpful. Many motivations and concerns underlie support of the bill. Simultaneously, insight may be gained from an appreciation of the organization behind the bill, the ideals that inform that organization, and the individual lawyer credited as the bill's architect. Arizonans interested in a thorough understanding of the bill must understand its creation story.

SB1070 represents a successful foray into mainstream politics by an organization called the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR). FAIR was identified in 2007 as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC). FAIR was founded in 1978 by John Tanton, an environmental, population control, and immigration reform advocate whose white nationalist views are documented in his private papers at the Bentley Historical Library at the University of Michigan.

Kris Kobach, a lawyer whose impressive educational background and work history provides an initial legitimacy to his views, works for the legal arm of FAIR and is credited as the original architect of the SB1070. Kobach is identified by SPLC as one of the media savvy, new age nativists whose promotion of intolerance is surprisingly effective.

This information is not intended to impugn the motivations of all SB1070 supporters, but to provoke a richer understanding of the process that led to this controversial bill.

Stats do not sway me

Dear Editor:

Regarding C.W. (Bill) Griffin's comments in "Capitalism thrives under socialists" (AFN, July 28). The statistics quoted are moot in this current political climate and the commentary infers that even though Democrats have gone socialistic, they're innocuous politically because they do a better job economically.

Today, Americans are paralyzed by fear and frustration in anticipation of what the current administration will dictate next. What economically savvy party is running the show now?

Granted, the U.S. economy is a priority to all Americans. It is also a priority to Americans that those elected as stewards of the U.S. remain true to the oath of their office: morally and ethically, to uphold and abide by the laws of the Constitution. The current and recent past political administrations have warped common sense, the economy, and personal liberties. For example, more than a few of our children are semi-functional illiterates, respect for our country and individuals is absent, our economy is weak, our employment options are nonexistent, and our laws are disregarded.

Statistical party information does not make good stewards.
