Over the past several years, driving distractions caused by mobile devices have been a hot topic here in Arizona and across the nation. Study after study has confirmed that distractions can worsen driving performance, making the roads more dangerous for everyone.

As an Allstate agency owner, I know firsthand the dangers that lurk for new and experienced drivers alike. Yet, Arizona is one of only eight states without a comprehensive ban on texting and driving.

Thanks to House Bill 2359, pre-filed by Rep. Karen Fann, we are moving in the right direction. This bill would make it illegal for new drivers to talk or text on a cell phone while driving.

Although texting bans should apply to all drivers, House Bill 2359 is a step forward. Let’s join together and urge local lawmakers to pass this bill and use it as a building block to ban texting and driving for everyone.

Mounting evidence shows it’s time to prohibit texting and driving in all 50 states; this effort puts Arizona one step closer to joining the 42 states on that list.

Texting and driving increases a driver’s risk of crashing by 23 times — and sending just one text while driving is like having four beers. Considering car crashes are the number one killer of teens, why wouldn’t we act to put this law on the books?
