As someone who has been adamantly and actively opposed to Mormon doctrine for the last 25 years, I could not let your article on the increase in Mormon missionary activity due to the decrease in age requirements, go without mention (“Local LDS stakes see rise in young missionary applicants as church lowers minimum age,” AFN, Oct. 24).

The “overseer” to missionaries stated at the end of the article that, “Our mission remains treating our neighbors with respect and love and keeping the Ten Commandments.” While it is true that many Mormons have virtuous characters, it is entirely inaccurate and quite deceitful to summarize the basic goal of LDS activity as centering within the realm of kindness to one’s neighbor. As all religions do, they are promoting doctrine; hence, non-Mormon Christians are unalterably opposed to the doctrine being promulgated, not their ethical values. For example, the Bible declares there is only one God (Isaiah 43:10, 44:6-8, 45:5,6,18-22), while Joseph Smith, the founder of Mormonism, insisted in utter contradiction to the Bible (which they say they believe) that there are many gods (“History of the Church,” vol. 6, p. 308 and 474), and that, “No man or woman will ever enter into the celestial kingdom of God without the consent of Joseph Smith. (They) must have the certificate of Joseph Smith Jr. as a passport to their entrance...” (“Journal of Discourses,” by Brigham Young, vol. 7, p. 289).

To be perfectly blunt, all of this is complete nonsense and is a flat-out denial of biblical Christianity whether they like to hear it or not. Any number of thousands of articles written by passionate and articulate Christians sternly objecting to the doctrinal fallacies of this denomination may be found online so I need go no further; except to say that contrary to the 19-year-old’s assertion in your coverage that Mormons are “proclaiming the gospel,” we rather feel that they are proclaiming, “another gospel” according to 2 Corinthians 11:4, and “another gospel” cannot and will not save anyone who embraces it, regardless of how sincere they are in believing it (Matthew 7:22; 25:1-13).
