As a former school counselor, I have encountered numerous children who suffer from various learning difficulties.  As a result, I have explored countless options in assisting students who struggle with reading, math computations or just staying focused in the classroom.  What I discovered is a phenomenon called brain training. 

Brain training changes an individual’s capacity to think and learn.  Many assume intelligence potential is fixed at birth and learning disabilities are permanent.  This is not true!  The brain can be strengthened and IQ increased. 

Research has identified cognitive skills as the root source of learning.  Brain training describes a set of revolutionary new techniques developed by brain researchers and educators that test, target and strengthen specific mental skills.  If mental skills—such as auditory processing and memory—are strong, learning comes easily and naturally.  If skill weaknesses remain hidden, a student will face occasional or even chronic learning, reading and performance struggles.  Strengthening weak skills is the key!

A 2005 study in one of the nation’s largest school districts revealed that one year of small group tutoring added only one additional month of reading proficiency to student’s reading levels.  In contrast, brain training combined with reading instruction produced over 3.5 years of improvement in just 6 months.  Nothing else can do what brain training can do.

As parents of a child with learning issues we struggled to find a program to help with her reading skills. After formal educational testing with her Psychologist was done, LearningRx was recommended. I believe the methods used for cognitive training really helped with not only school work but with emotional issues as well. My daughter seemed to be happier in general after her training sessions. At 11 years of age I think a child should be responsible for his/her school work, and only require guidance from a parent. Without this program I fear we would have been struggling as a family to complete assignments, instead of seeing her independently accomplish her work. Her grades are excellent, although she will not be satisfied until she gets straight As. Reading is still not a favorite subject; however I see her reading for information now. In the past she never researched anything, we always had to read instructions, or obtain information for her. Also, her reading fluency and word attack has improved and that was our initial goal. One of the other benefits is the loss of a particularly annoying response we heard for years. In response to almost any question she would state, "I don't know." Now we never hear that statement. I would like to thank her primary trainer. He was reliable, professional, understanding and patient with our child. She even looked forward to returning to LearningRx and her trainer after the holiday break. That really caught me by surprise! Thanks for everything. Brain training has gotten a lot of press lately, so learn to distinguish between the helpful and not-so-helpful types of brain training, and then sign up for a good brain training program. Research a company's clinical studies and clinical trials. Also, request parent and/or student testimonials. Summer is the ideal time to do sign up because training won’t conflict with school. Many parents agree that brain training was the best thing they could have done for their child and summer is a great time to start...just in time to prepare for their next school year.

Those of us involved in teaching students -- of all ages -- how to read, know that it is possible to train the brain to process information (letters, words, phrases, sentences) more efficiently. I have two children who struggle in school. My youngest struggles with reading and my 10 year old struggles with comprehension. I have hired tutors, which seems to help a bit at the time, but once we stop tutoring the same problems reoccur. I have tried some of the computer software programs that are commented on this blog, but they didn't make a difference with my kids. They both seem to respond best to learning from another person, like a tutor. Any other program suggestions?

Dianna, many individuals-children and adults-seem to learn best from another person, not a computer. It sounds like you are seeking a private training specialist.
