With the extra long football season thanks to the Desert Vista's state title, I haven't really had a chance to jump into the winter sports season so far.

I've been to a wrestling match - imagine that - but that is about it.

So I figured I'd update what is going on in the early going on the hardwood.

The basketball teams are off a good start as the Division I programs have combined for a 13-4 overall record.

The Mountain Pointe and Desert Vista boys teams are both 3-0 with each pulling off an impressive win in the early going.

The Thunder opened the year with a test and come through with a 70-55 win over Pinnacle, which brought back a lot of its firepower from last year's Class 5A Division II state semifinal squad and went 5-0 in the Paradise Valley Invite to open the year.

Mountain Pointe, which has a new roster with the loss of 10 graduates and four new transfers for 2011-12, knocked off Brophy, 58-54, despite trailing almost the entire game.

The Pride was down 30-20 at the half and as much as 19 in the third quarter before going on a 19-6 run in the fourth quarter to pull off the win.

"I don't think (Brophy) knew what hit them," Pride coach Brian Fleming said. "No one expects anything from us (because of the loss of 10 players) but that's OK. I like being the underdog."

The Pride girls are 6-2 after going 4-2 in the Highland tournament to open the season followed up with a road wins at Xavier and Marcos de Niza.

The Desert Vista girls opened with a couple of tough defeats against Pinnacle, which was the 5A II state runner-up last season, and Highland, which is 8-0 on the year, before getting the best of McClintock on Friday night.
