You hear Monday night football and I think of Howard Cossell, Dandy Don, ‘Turn out the Lights,' and more recently Al Michaels, Dennis Miller and John Madden.

Nowhere in that montage comes the thought of high school football.

But guess what?

It's happening this year.

Because of stadium usage problems, the Class 5A Division I and II state title games are being held on Monday, Dec. 13.

It just seems silly.

I would hope the Arizona Interscholastic Association looked at other options, if their contract with the University of Phoenix Stadium, allows them to like University of Arizona Stadium or the Walkup Skydome in Flagstaff.

Whatever the case, the decision was to keep it in Phoenix and play the games on a Monday.

The 5A-II game starts at 4 p.m. and the 5A-I game is at 8 p.m.

It's is going make it harder to get big crowds for the first game because of work or keep away fans from the second game because of the late start.

Mountain Pointe coach Norris Vaughan apparently isn't looking that far ahead as it was news to him despite being public knowledge since the start of the season.

"Saturday's are ideal," he said. "In Georgia they start at 9 a.m. and play all of the championship games on the same day, one after the other. It's a great day."
