From the What If Dept. comes this little nugget from Jeremy Hathcock.

The highly successful Desert Ridge coach used to end every season checking out what other positions might be a good fit for him.

Hatchcock, who is preparing his Jaguars to take on Mountain Pointe at McClintock on Friday, was hired in 2006 and turned around a program that went 4-27 in the three years before he took over. He matched that win total in his first season, but was unsure if it was a place that could be competitive.

At the time Desert Ridge was in the Fiesta Region with Hamilton, Chandler, Highland, Gilbert and Mesquite.

“We never had a breather,” Hathcock said. “I don’t know how we won four games.”

For some time he considered making a move and that included talking to Mountain Pointe administrators the year Norris Vaughan, who was the only one to be offered the job, was hired.

“I was looking for jobs every year,” Hathcock said. “(Former Chandler coach) Jim Ewan told me to either make a move or be happy where you are while establishing discipline and good work ethic. We decided it would here.”

Considering the Jaguars are in their fourth straight semifinal and the Pride have surged with Vaughan running the program, it has worked out just fine for both programs.
