Dan Hinds has had a pretty fantastic year and along with it has come numerous awards.

While winning a state football title has its privileges, Hinds has his priorities straight.

The Desert Vista mentor was up for the Coach of the Year at Monday’s Champions Award Luncheon put on by the Arizona Interscholastic Association.

Hinds, however, asked to have his name pulled off the nominees list as he was in the running against Scot Bemis, who died in January after a battle lung cancer.

Bemis, 45, was a highly successful coach at Notre Dame Prep.

Hinds coached with Bemis at McClintock for a short period.

"Scot was a mentor for me," Hinds told the Arizona Republic. "Just watching how he did things really got me off to a great start in the profession."

Hinds and Notre Dame athletic director Monica Barrett accepted the award on Bemis’ behalf.

It was a class move by a class guy.
