Dr. Anna Battle's final year at Desert Vista was about as good as it gets.

The Desert Vista out-going principal is about involved in athletics as any adminstrator as you'll find.

There was no denying she was was the Thunder biggest supporter as she was there to hug just about every athlete win or lose.

The moment I will never forget came at Centennial this last football season.

Dr. Battle, who is leaving to the assistant superintendent for district operations at Tempe Union, commands respect and rarely has anyone telling her what to do, but on this particular Friday night the side judge kept telling her to get off his sideline.

He felt she was too close the action and was very authoritative about it.

She was taken aback and it became a running joke.

There was no joking about the season the Desert Vista athletic program had this season that included three team state championships in girls cross country, girls swimming and girls basketball.

It has led to Desert Vista being honored with two major awards given out by the Arizona Interscholastic Association for the 2013-14 school year.

DV won the H.A. Hendrickson Award from AIA Executive Board determined by a point system approved by the AIA Legislative Council. Schools from the two large divisions were eligible for it.

The Thunder also earned the Director's Cup Award from the AIA.

The selection committee reviews all eligible nominations, based on:

* Creative implementation of the Pursuing Victory With Honor initiative, advancing the six pillars of character — trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship in everyday campus life

* Game management, sportsmanlike conduct and activity participation

* Percentage of students participating in AIA-sanctioned activities and the impact those students had on the school's climate

Earning two big-time AIA awards in Dr. Battle's final year seems rather fitting after going out of her way to make sports such a vital part of the Thunder community.
