Sue Humphrey, the legendary track coach, is back in Arizona and hanging out in Ahwatukee.

Humphrey is on the Desert Vista coaching staff after returning the area from Texas to help take care of her 91-year-old mother.

“I have to keep in it or I will go crazy,” she said after the Thunder’s meet with Mountain Pointe on Wednesday.

Humphrey started the Arizona State women’s track team in 1975.

Here is what else I found out about her from the USTAF’s announcement of being the 2004 Olympic coach:

Humphrey has achieved international success as a high jump coach as a member of the 1992 and 1996 Olympic staffs. She headed up Team USA’s delegation at the 1985 IAAF World Cup and the 1987 Pan American Games. An accomplished author of coaching manuals and videos, Humphrey coached 1996 Olympic high jump gold medalist Charles Austin, and she has coached three of the seven American women to have cleared 6 feet, 6 inches or higher in the high jump - Coleen Sommer, Yolanda Henry and Angie Bradburn.

Humphrey was a women’s assistant coach at the University of Texas from 1984-89, during which time she coached NCAA champions in the high jump, triple jump and long jump. She has worked as an assistant at Arizona State and as a volunteer at Cal State-Long Beach and with the University of Texas men’s team.

Thunder girls coach Cassandra Kline has gone out of her way to make sure her athletes know exactly who they are being coached by.

“When they hear what it takes to be an elite athlete from someone who has coached the best in the world it resonates a little more,” Kline said. “We are blessed.”
