Dani Jones made a special trip just to have a chance to compete in the Dream Mile.
It paid off in a big way.
The Desert Vista elite distance runner showed Saturday why she sought out entrance into one of the country's elite events by finishing third in the Dream Mile in New York.
Jones finished third in the Dream Mile in 4 minutes and 43.4 seconds at Adidas GP. She hit 4:41.00 for 1600, setting the Arizona state record by eight seconds.
The winning time by Sarah Feeny was 4:39.23 with Stephanie Jenks next at 4:42.68.
It's a been a pretty special year for Jones, who went to Orlando in May needing to win a Gold Series event to qualify for the Dream Mile and pulled it off.
She won the Division I state cross country meet by breaking her best time by a minute, followed it up with a 15th place finish at Nike Cross Nationals in Portland for the best performance by an Arizona girls in the 10 years of the event.
Then in track she did well at the Arcadia Invitational after missing four weeks because of a stress fracture before winning the 1600 and 3200 meter runs at the state meet while finishing second in the 800.
