The Desert Vista and Mountain Pointe baseball teams are both off to terrific starts.
Both started the year somewhat under the radar but have firmly planted themselves in the Division I contender list.
The Thunder are 16-4 and have won 10 straight games entering Friday’s game at Mountain Pointe.
Mountain Pointe won 14 of its first 18 games with three of the defeats coming against Brophy.
Their first meeting of the year is the only time in my years in Ahwatukee where it feels like both teams are among the top 5 in the state.
Mountain Pointe has been there for the most part in the three years, while Desert Vista has been good but more like a top 15 team.
Can you imagine if the bracket and baseball gods somehow work it so both teams made the state title game? I’m guessing mayhem would ensue.
Many of the players grew up playing in the same youth leagues and have known each other for years. It adds an extra twist to the rivalry between the two schools.
I plan on bringing a bag of peanuts and enjoying these two teams get after it for this first time in 2013.
