I was kind of glad Emily Wolph missed the shot.

The Desert Vista junior was inserted back into a blowout win over Phoenix North on Wednesday night when it came to light that she was sitting at 998 career points.

She took a 3-pointer from the left wing that was a little long. She came out a few minutes later knowing the Thunder have more important things ahead with a battle with nationally-ranked St. Mary’s in the second round of the Division I state playoffs.

While it would have been nice for Wolph to reach the milestone at home, it would be more fitting, in my mind, if she did it by getting a steal on defense, goes coast to coast and hits a layup before being thrown to the floor by a hard foul.

Then she would have gotten up made the free throw and get back on defense.

It would be a fitting tribute to the way Wolph plays the game.

She was playing last night in front of a Boise State coach and already has an offer from Santa Clara. Wolph is being sought out for all around game, but her toughness is what sticks out most in my mind.

Desert Vista coach J’Ontar Coleman knows he is lucky to have Wolph setting the pace for the Thunder.

“She played a great game,” Coleman said. “She plays sound, hits her shots and she is our spark. We have bigger plans on Friday but it will be good to see her get there.”
