The first day of the PING Phoenix Junior Championships was on Monday.

Desert Vista's Randy Ross got off to a strong start at Arizona State's Karsten Golf Course.

The incoming senior was tied for second after shooting a 34-35--69 to sit one shot behind Tyler Kerston.

The three-round event concludes Wednesday.

Desert Vista's other entrant Colton Estevez had a more difficult time on the 6,858-yard course as he was in 54th with a 39-44-83.

Ross finished sixth and tied for fifth at the last two state meets.
