For those who didn't know Scot Bemis here is a little insight into how big his heart was.

Bemis, for those who don't know, died Sunday from lung cancer. Bemis, 45, started the football program at Notre Dame Prep in Scottsdale and coached the girls soccer team.

In December of 2008, I had the worst day of my career as I was laid off from a large area newspaper.

Despite being let go on Tuesday, I worked for the paper that Saturday covering the state football championships.

It was a terribly angry time for me. I was let go as a full-time employee and yet one of the editors called the next day to see if I could still work for them as a freelancer.

Anyway, the game I covered that weekend was Notre Dame vs. Tucson Santa Rita. Bemis led the Saints to their second state title that day.

And in the midst of the celebration, he pulled me aside and gave me words of encouragement after hearing about my situation.

Here he was completing a season-long goal with his team celebrating all around him and Bemis took the time to tell me to keep my chin up.

The timing was perfect for me and something I needed.

It was clearly a time when he could and should have been all about himself and his program and yet he found the time for someone else in need.
