The Mountain Pointe boys soccer team will make its second trek in four days to Yuma for the postseason.

As the 12th seed in the Class 5A Division I state tournament, the road isn't supposed to be easy.

But this far? That's a different story.

The first two-rounds are supposed to be played at neutral sites - a revelation made known to the coaches two weeks ago - but the Pride have had to travel 3 ½ hours (for a total of seven) to Cibola High for Wednesday's game against No. 5 Yuma San Luis (a 2-1 win) and Saturday's quarterfinal against No. 4 Yuma Kofa.

"To say there has been a lot of questions and confusion with the playoffs this year would be an understatement," Mountain Pointe coach Bryan Sabato said.

The Arizona Interscholastic Association by-laws state the game has to be in the region of the higher seed.

Sabato isn't complaining about the travel - "As long as we are in the playoffs I'd play in Kingdom Com," he said - but does believe it takes its toll one way or another, during the match or in school the next day.

The team didn't get back from the match, which started at 5 p.m., on Wednesday until midnight. Phoenix Alhambra had to make the same trip and its game didn't start until 7 p.m.

"Physically it was a very difficult game to play," he said. "The weather made it difficult. Playing soccer into 30 mph headwind is awful hard.

"Give the boys credit. Everything that was supposed to go against us did and we still won."

The Pride hopes to have a repeat performance on Saturday. At least it is a 1 p.m. start and there is no school the next day.
