J'ontar Coleman just wanted to know for sure.

He knew in his heart that he should remain the Desert Vista girls basketballl coach, but it wasn't official until Wednesday.

"I had no idea the process took that long, but I am excited," he said. "We had a good thing going."

Coleman took over with 10 regular season games remaining last year after first-year coach Jaysie Chambers-Sheppard was asked to resigned and eventually fired for various reasons.

He was promoted from junior varsity coach and led the team to a 7-5 record before losing in the second round of the playoffs to St. Mary's, the eventual Division I champions.

"We want to continue playing with passion and playing hard," he said. "They played hard for me and we will only be better next year.

With the nucleus the Thunder have coming back expectations are going to be high and he is ready to make it become a reality.

"We are a state-caliber team," Coleman said. "I thought we were last year. I am not worried about expectations and we will embrace it."

Look for an extended story on Coleman's hiring in next week's edition of the AFN.
