If the state wrestling tournament for freshman is any indication, Desert Vista is going to have a lot of depth in the years to come.
The varsity lineup is filled with talented juniors, a couple of sophomores and a freshman as the team prepares this week for the state qualifying sectional.
And now word comes that the Thunder won the freshmen tournament with seven individual champions, two runners-up, one third and two fourth-place finishers.
It was enough to win the event with 100 points. Anthem Boulder Creek, behind five individual champs, was second with 96 points. Host Chandler Hamilton was third with 54 points and Lakeside Blue Ridge was fourth with 46 points and Phoenix Horizon rounded out the top five with 44 points.
Individual champs for the Thunder were Jordan Robinson (103B), Conner Dols (119B), Jeff Lefevre (125A), Pat McCarty (130A), Mitchell White (152A), DJ Butler (189B) and Adam Ortega (215).
There were 411 total wrestlers representing 32 schools in the state's largest one-day tournament.
The event is spearheaded by tournament director Tom Wokasch, who volunteered his time for the 21st year.
