Since taking over the Desert Vista girls basketball program in mid-January, J’ontar Coleman has put his own spin things.
One thing that he kept from the previous regime is bringing junior guard Emily Wolph coming off the bench.
It would have been one of the first things I changed, but there is no arguing with the results entering Tuesday's first-round sectional game against Marcos de Niza.
When the 5-foot-7 Wolph gets in the tempo of the game changes and the Thunder are off and running. I’ve seen DV play twice since Coleman took over and as soon she gets in it is like the team gets a shot of a adrenaline.
She is off and running, pushing the offense, getting steals and making big shots.
Wolph, who has an offer from Santa Clara and has 971 career points, is averaging a career-best and team-high 14.8 points on the season. Since Coleman took over for the Jan. 15 Sandra Day O’Connor game, Wolph is averaging 17.8 points.
“Our energy level changes when she comes in,” Coleman said. “I’m keeping her on the bench. It always seems to give us a boost.”
