While unofficially official it appears all four of the Division I basketball teams will make the postseason.
Two things are keeping it an actuality:
The AIA isn't releasing the final rankings until next Sunday. It was updated this morning and sectional play, which begins on Wednesday, could change the 24-team field.
So here is where it stands as of Saturday morning.
The Mountain Pointe and Desert Vista boys both appear to have missed out on the 8-team Division I, Section III tournament as they finished ninth and 10th overall, respectively.
Both teams, however, appear to be in line to make the state tournament as the Pride is 20th and the Thunder 22nd.
The sectional tournaments count in the overall rankings so there will be some movement.
The bigger worry would be the automatic qualifier rule, which says the semifinalists in the three section tournaments all make the state tournament regardless of rankings.
The Division I, Section I tournament has four teams outside the top 24, meaning if they all - regardless of how slim those chances are - win their first round sectional game they'd probably push out the 21 through 24 in the seedings.
Is it going to happen? Hardly, but until it doesn't it is a possibility.
The top eight Division I, Section II are all ranked ahead of MP and DV so a similar scenario doesn't apply.
Such scenarios are not needed to be explained for the Pride and Thunder girls teams.
Mountain Pointe is sixth overall and and No. 2 in its sectional, while the Thunder are 15th and third.
Assuming nothing changes the Pride would play Boulder Creek in the first round of the sectional and Desert Vista is in line to face Marcos de Niza.
If both win then they'd play each other in the sectional semifinals.
The Horizon Honors girls are No. 37 overall in Division III and won't make the postseason, while Chandler Valley Christian, which has five Ahwatukee players on the roster, is No. 9 overall and No. 1 in DIII, Section 3.
The Horizon Honors boys are No. 43 in Division III and will miss out on the postseason.
