A couple of lingering questions surrounding both of the Desert Vista basketball programs have some answers.

The first comes from the Thunder girls game from Monday when one of the referees was replaced at halftime.

One of the refs strained his hamstring so he was replaced by an alternate, according to the AIA’s head of officials Gary Welchel.

He added that the three-week window of sectionals and the state tournament has been tough on the officials, most of whom do college games as well.

“It’s has taken a real physical toll on them,” he said. “We want the best doing these games and they get worn out. It is why we always have alternates at the game.”

Welchel said it has happened a couple of times and that he saw one personally up Tim’sToyotaCenter when the ref blew out his calf.

“It just kept getting bigger. I’ve never seen anything like it,” he said.

In the Desert Vista boys game on Tuesday, the Thunder were nailed for a technical foul early in the game because KJ Hoffman wasn’t listed in the official book and it wasn’t known until he was substituted in the first quarter.

Gilbert made both ensuing free throws in a tight game that the Thunder eventually won 53-50.

“I got on my guy for that one; we can’t have that,” coach Dave Williams said. “If it had made a difference in the game that would have been hard to deal with.”
