Jaysie Chambers Sheppard says the best thing she will be able to do as the Desert Vista girls basketball coach is being able to relate to the players.

“I had attitude issues as a young player,” she said on Monday after meeting the parents of the program. “I had to learn how to use that energy in the right direction and once I did, it helped me separate me from the rest of the players.

“I can teach them a love for the game on and off the court.”

Coach Sheppard, who still needs to be officially approved by the board, made a nice impression with her new family.

She expects to be able to connect with the player at the end of the bench along the all-state players who comes through the program.

“I know how it is to be the worst on the team and how to be the best on the team,” Chambers said. “I used to be the last one to all of the work outs, completely out of shape and didn’t understand the responsibility to the team.

“I missed the whole entire Christmas break week of practice because I didn’t know any better. Once the heart and love was there I finally took off. “
