No matter what Desert Vista girls basketball does this postseason, the school has to post the head coach position at the end of the year.

Now, if interim coach J'Ontar Coleman knocks off nationally-ranked St. Mary's on Friday, I am pretty confident he'll get the job.

As is Coleman, who took over the program on Jan. 14 after first-year coach Jaysie Chambers-Sheppard was asked to resign because of various reasons, has done a fine job in a difficult situation.

"He's done a good job," Desert Vista athletic director TJ Snyder said.

He has led the Thunder to a 6-3 record heading into the second round of the Division I state tournament.

Contracts at the high school level can't be extended like it does at the college and pro level. Contracts have to be renewed each year and in a case like this, the position has to be opened to the entire district.

With two Division I college players - Emily Wolph and Kristine Anigwe - on next year's team there will be plenty of interest.

Coleman, who started the season as the JV coach, has shown he can handle the job.

It will be an interesting situation to watch play out.
