The 50-mile transfer rule has been tabled until March by the Arizona Interscholastic Association executive board.

As long as it isn’t a sign of the proposal being brushed aside completely, it is the right thing to do.

This decision has a chance to be one of the most impactful rules ever put into the by-laws so make sure it is right. Don’t rush it. Don’t make mistakes. Examine it, define it, perfect it and pass it.

The school year has started so it would be difficult to start something so important before the winter sports or spring sports anyway.

When it passes – and hopefully it gets to that point – it has to begin at the start of school year so no reason to rush it at this point.

I hear part of the reason it is being tabled is the fact not everyone is comfortable with the 50-mile number. I wouldn’t be surprised if it eventually falls to 35 and I would be good with that number.

Either way, it will go a long way in deterring families – whether it is 50 or 35 – from transferring if they know they are subject to sitting out a full season.
