Ready for Round 2?
The Desert Vista and Mountain Pointe baseball teams better be if national rankings mean anything at all.
The Thunder plays at Sandra Day O’Connor this afternoon and the Pride travels to Desert Ridge.
In the MaxPreps Top 50 National Rankings, O’Connor is No. 27 and Desert Ridge is No. 23.
In my mind national rankings are silly, but there is no question these two teams are deserving of some praise with the seasons they’ve had.
Desert Ridge is 26-5 and their top player Riley Unroe is listed as one of MaxPrep’s candidates for national player of the year. He is hitting .565 with 53 runs, 14 doubles, five triples, 10 home runs and 59 RBIs.
Considering they can pitch around Unroe, the bigger concern for the Pride, who have won six in a row, might be the Jags’ ace Skyler Cohn who figures to be standing in the middle of the diamond inning after inning.
The right-hander is 9-1 with a 1.33 ERA in 58 innings. He has four complete games and two shutouts among his 13 appearances, including nine starts.
Sandra Day O’Connor is 29-3 with the silver lining for the Thunder being the fact that all three defeats have come in the last 10 games.
The Eagles don’t have a big thumper like Unroe, but they are hitting .363 as a team with five players having at least 20 RBIs. It might be a sign of trouble for the Thunder considering the amount of pitchers used (4) and number of pitchers thrown in the 11-inning first-round win over Brophy.
Then again if Desert Vista proved anything in Saturday’s 12-10 win over Brophy is never count them out.
