Envy.

It is all I could think of when interviewing Davis Evans, a local junior golfer who is playing in the Junior Worlds next week.

He is 12 years old and is shooting scores I could only dream of and playing on courses like Torrey Pines in San Diego and Pinehurst in North Carolina that don’t allow hacks like me on their fairways.

I love golf and I stink at golf.

It is fun and infuriating.

Evans appears to have a bright future and plays at a different level than this 12 handicap. It is not uncommon with these young golfers.

Before I moved to Arizona, there was a junior golf tournament in Ohio I covered every year that brought in some of the top juniors from around the world (Michelle Wie and Casey Wittenberg to name a few) and I was amazed not only at what they could do on the course but how they went about it.

Generally junior golfers play with no fear. They bomb away, go for pins and get mad when they shoot in the 80s.

I, on the other hand, put so many miles on a golf cart chasing my errant shots that it needs an oil change before and after I take it around the course and I am ecstatic to shoot in the 80s and get slightly miffed if I bleed into the 100s.

So here is to Evans and other junior golfers that can control that little white ball better in their short life than I can ever hope to in my entire frustrating career on the links.
