Wesley Payne remained undefeated.
The Mountain Pointe senior played his final high school football game on Monday in the 4th annual Canyon Coast Classic, an exhibition between Arizona and Southern California seniors, at Riverside Community College in California.
Arizona won for the third straight year as it held off a late rally by the SoCal squad to win 27-21 after opening up a 24-7.
The Arizona squad was coach by Glendale Community College assistant coach Jason Jewell, who also runs the football website 24-7Football.com.
He said Payne, who will likely continue his career at community college, performed well as a running back and linebacker.
“Wesley played well,” Jewell said. “He played mostly at running back but we threw him in at linebacker out of need and he made some good plays.”
Marcos de Niza quarterback Josh Eckley passed for 169 yards and Basha QB Zach Werlinger scored on a 10-yard run.
The future of the game, or at least the January time frame, could be in doubt as it is supposed to be played in Arizona next year, but the Arizona Interscholastic Association is against all-star games within the school year.
