Dan Hinds is no dummy.

Heading into Saturday’s Arizona vs. Southern California All-Star Game, Hinds surrounded himself with some of the state’s top coaches.

Apollo coach Zack Threadgill will run the offense, Pinnacle’s Dana Zupke and Sabino coach Jay Campos will be there as well and Canyon del Oro coach Dustin Peace will control the defense.

So what does that leave for Hinds?

“I get to watch some good football,” Hinds joked.

The game takes place Saturday at Surprise Stadium at 7 p.m. and is part of a weekend of football festivities.

It starts off with an Arizona All-Star Game as a squad made up of Division IV players takes on a Division V/VI combo squad on Friday at 7 p.m. and continues Saturday morning with the Arizona Football Coaches Association passing league tournament. It is held all day long with the title game being played at halftime of the All-Star Game.

The lone area player involved is Mountain Pointe graduate Raynon Blackshire, a two-way lineman.

Hinds is excited about the opportunity and after all it is part of the banquet circuit after winning the state title.

The one thing he regrets is the fact that many of Arizona’s top players are sitting this event out.

Whether it be pressure from college coaches, parents or even their own reservations, the risk of injury has the Arizona roster a little light.

“It is tough but at the same time you understand,” Hinds said.
