Local ballplayers head to Chase Field for HR derby

Need a power surge to get through the lazy days of Winter Break?

Then head to Chase Field starting on Wednesday for The International Power Showcase High School Home Run Derby.

The three-day event kicked off Tuesday in Peoria with MLB Scout Day for underclassmen and concludes with the Dec. 30 home run derby.

Wednesday's action begins a home run derby at Chase Field with Mountain Pointe's Joey Curletta and Desert Vista's Shaun Chase participating. The field includes amateur athletes from around the country and some international athletes as well.

Then on Thursday the five finalists of the showcase will begin at 9:15 a.m.

Each representative will receive a total of 25 outs broken into two rounds. Players will use both metal and wood bats. The first 10 outs (wood) and the second 15 (metal).
