The Arizona Interscholastic Association made several announcements in this month’s meeting.

The one I wanted to know about the most was the sectional breakdown for the individual sports and what former Class 5A Division II schools are now going to be competing against former 5A I schools.

Desert Vista and Mountain Pointe are in Division I across the board as expected.

State meets are going to have a whole new look and level of difficulty.

In cross country, five of the top seven finishing Class 5A Division II boys teams in 2009 are now lumped into the same section of all of the 5A I schools instantly making the team title race a whole lot of fun.

In swimming, Scottsdale Chaparral, Phoenix Brophy and some of the other great programs that have long state champions streaks are going to have to take a backseat to someone else getting the biggest trophy available.

In wrestling, Tucson Sunnyside has won 13 consecutive state titles and 28 overall, but allowed other programs get some glory in recent years while dominating 5A II. The Blue Devils will now be the team to beat in the state's biggest division instead of Tempe Corona del Sol and Mesa, the two programs that have made the most of the the division split that was put into place in 2005.

There are great examples of top-flight programs jumping to the next level and pitting perennial contenders against each that haven’t seen much of each other since the AIA went to the old format in 2005.
