Mountain Pointe football coach Norris Vaughan said the timing is just right for the team's bye week.
"We are getting ready for a tough stretch and this gives us the chance to work on some things," he said. "We are not focusing on (Mesa) Desert Ridge that much yet. We are going back to some fundamentals and getting everything straightened out."
The Pride (5-1, 2-0) have moved into No.2 in the Class 5A Division I power rankings behind Chandler Hamilton (7-0).
The East Valley Region gets progressively tougher over the final four weeks with the Jaguars (3-3), Mesa Westwood (3-3), Gilbert Perry (5-1) and Tempe Marcos de Niza (6-0).
"We are going to have to play our best football," Vaughan said. "The one thing we are worried about is conditioning because we haven't had our starters play a full game a lot because of blowouts. We are working on that this week and working them pretty hard."
