With the spring sports season starting up today with baseball and softball tryouts, I thought I would pass along this little tidbit.

In talking to Mountain Pointe slugger Joey Curletta, who signed with Central Arizona, he said he had a good time showing off his state title ring to some Desert Vista baseball players when the two schools met on the basketball court on Thursday.

"I was talking to the DV kids and I was wearing my ring and they were all over me," Curletta said. "They think they are going to get (one) but we will see."

Curletta said he was scheduled to visit Arizona on Saturday and he has drawn some interest from Vanderbilt (for his sophomore year).

He added the he may end up playing outfield this year for the Pride and that he had to shut down for some time during the offseason because of a back issue but he is 100 percent now.

Curletta will have less protection in the lineup with Arizona home run king Kevin Cron at Texas Christian, but the offense will still be humming with the Kingery twins, Brantley Bell and others swinging away.

With the new bats and Cron gone, it will be difficult to match last year's numbers, but don't be surprised if Curletta comes close.

He batted .420 with 49 runs, 10 doubles, 21 home runs and 57 RBIs.
