Catching up with five area minor leaguers

The area is brimming with baseball talent.

It doesn’t matter if you are at the little league park watching the District 13 tournament or watching MLB Network and seeing C.J. Cron, a Mountain Pointe product, lacing line drives all over big-league ballparks, Ahwatukee is producing a ton of talent on the diamond.

A little less visible is the five former area high school players bouncing around the minor leagues.

So let’s catch up with how some of the other Tukee talent is doing this summer.

Kevin Cron

Through 13 games, Cron was hitting .308 with five doubles, two home runs and nine RBIs. He also had more walks (5) thanks strikeouts (3).

The 2011 Mountain Pointe graduate is playing for Missoula Osprey (Rookie Pioneer League) in the Diamondbacks organization.

Joey Curletta

Through 82 games, the right fielder was hitting .291 with 17 doubles, a triple and a three home run and 40 RBIs. He had seven stolen bases in 15 attempts and had an OPS of .727.

The 2012 Mountain Pointe graduate is playing for the Great Lakes Loons (Class A Midwest League) in the Dodgers organization.

Jordan Kipper

The right-hander has appeared in three games in relief since signing out of Texas Christian. In 4 2/3 innings, he has allowed eight hits, four earned runs for an ERA of 7.71. He has three strikeouts and a walk.

The 2011 Mountain Pointe graduate is playing for the Orem Owls (Rookie Pioneer League) in the Angels organization.

Cole Tucker

Through 11 games, the shortstop was hitting .306 with seven runs, a doubles and three RBIs. He had a on-base percentage of .468 and an OPS of .801 with two stolen bases in five games.

The 2014 Mountain Pointe graduate is playing for the GCL Pirates (Rookie Gulf Coast League) in the Pirates organization.

Tyler Viza

The right-hander has made 16 starts with difficult results as he Viza has a 3-11 record with a 5.10 ERA. In 84 2/3 innings, he has allowed 112 hits, 48 earned runs, with 47 strikeouts and 16 walks.

His last outing on July 3 was one of his best on the season as Viza limited Hagerstown to four hits, one earned run and struck out four in six innings for the win.

The 2012 Desert Vista graduate is playing for the Lakewood BlueClaws (Class A South Atlantic League) in the Phillies organization.
